About Us

On September 20, 1974 Virginia Beach City Council appropriated $16,000 to build a temporary fire house near the intersection of Sandbridge Road and Sandpiper Road. In October of that year, Sandbridge Fire Brigade was incorporated with fifteen volunteer charter members. The station’s ambulances consisted of a Chevy Van and a four wheel Carry All procured from the Princess Anne Rescue Squad. The city supplied fire engine was manned by volunteers. In 1976, three paid firemen manned the station during the day with volunteers at night. Rescue services were provided by volunteers. The community of Sandbridge raised money and expanded the station to provide bunkrooms and modest facilities for the fire crews. In October 1977, the first paid firemen began 24 hour shifts at the station. Since 1977, fire has been staffed by career firefighters. EMS/Rescue Services have been provided by volunteers. In 1993, the Squad’s name was changed to Sandbridge Rescue and Fire, Inc. Because no facilities for Rescue existed at the Station, Rescue personnel operated off of pagers and responded from their homes to the Station to pick up an ambulance. Finally, on October 25, 2003 the new 13,500 square foot Station was dedicated and placed into service. This building has facilities for both fire and rescue personnel and their equipment and apparatus. Sandbridge Volunteer Rescue Squad strives to be staffed 24/7. Typically, the Squad responds to approximately eighteen hundred 911 calls per year. Less than ten percent of these calls are in Sandbridge. The balance is throughout the city of Virginia Beach. This is a great Rescue Squad of dedicated, professional volunteers. We are proud of our history and tradition. We are always looking for a few more good people.
